Roger Launius - Part One

Michael Laine sits down for a one hour interview with Roger Launius, Former Chief Historian at NASA.
In this episode, Roger Launius and Michael discuss Roger's storied career and how he became a historian at NASA. Started as a historian and then was given a reading list to get up to speed on the Aerospace History.  He was surprised that there were government historians.
He was asked to do "point papers", which was distilling complex ideas into a digestible, oral report.  Something he became quite good at his 12 years at NASA.
Then with an incredible offer, went on to the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in the early 2000s.  He goes into detail on how the space agency collected and recorded events in real time for historical record.

Key Highlights:
  • Roger Launius touches on the original writing drafts of the Kennedy Moon speech and their accessibility to the public.
  • Roger discusses the kinds of exhibits at the NASM, like SpaceShipOne and RedBull high altitude test.
  • “The Future belongs to the civilization who can master science & technology”
